Firework Safety
Fireworks and the Fourth of July have become a long-standing tradition in America, beginning during the first organized celebration of Independence Day in 1777. Today, the best (and safest) way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public firework show hosted by professionals. Check your local city or county listing for fireworks near you. If you pass those fireworks stands and choose to handle them yourself, proceed with extreme caution and keep the following in mind.
Protect Your Property
A wide variety of fireworks can be purchased, including ground-based and aerial displays. All of them can be dangerous and should be only lit outdoors. Survey your area and be sure to choose a location clear area away from people and free of tree limbs, vegetation, homes, and vehicles that could catch fire. Keep a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher near the site in case of emergency.
Properly Handling and Disposing Fireworks
Prepared, responsible, and sober adults are the only people who should be lighting fireworks. Light the fireworks one at a time, and do not light fireworks in a container or experiment with fireworks in any way. Soak used fireworks in water overnight and discard them safely. Over 31,000 of reported fires are started by fireworks annually, so be sure to handle and dispose of fireworks with care.
Protect Children & Pets from Fireworks
Keep children and pets away from fireworks. Young children are especially vulnerable to firework burns. Even sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, yet many adults allow children to use them without considering the serious injuries that can occur from handling them.
Fireworks can make your pets nervous. While fireworks are on display, keep your pets in a quiet, safe, and secure place. Be sure your pet has identification in case they run off.
Prevent Firework Mishaps
Staying safe, alert, and cautious when using fireworks will help you avoid any accident. In the event an incident occurs that requires attention beyond a home fire extinguisher or simple first aid, call 911.
